Mr. Merkl is a landscape architect with over 24 years of experience in landscape construction, construction administration, maintenance management and horticultural consulting. Prior to relocation to Starkville, Mr. Merkl served as a Principal with SLA Studio Land, Inc., an international landscape architecture and planning firm, with offices in Houston, TX, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, CA and Tokyo, Japan.

During his tenure with SLA Studio Land, Inc., Mr. Merkl helped to evolve a hands-on approach to construction administration and quality control in the implementation of residential community development, recreational facilities and environmental graphics. He also supervised the production of vegetation analysis/inventories and budget/costs evaluations.

Mr. Merkl also served as Corporate Director of Construction Administration for SLA Studio Land, Inc. His responsibilities included setting and administering company-wide policies and procedures for the implementation of design during the construction phase.

Recently Mr. Merkl, as Principal of Land Resource Consulting Group has provided landscape architectural services for the City of Columbus, Mississippi (WCBI Streetscape), Main Street Columbus, Inc., Golden Triangle Regional Airport (Entry and Terminal Improvements), Clay County Medical Center (Outpatient Facility, Wellness Center and Women's Clinic), Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS, The Hunter Henry Alumni Center at MSU and the jBrookwood Middle School in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Current design projects under way include development of the Master Plan for The Garden of Hope for the Save-a-Life Foundation in Tupelo, MS, Kemper Combustion Turbine Facility for TVA, Knoxville, TN, irrigation design for Viking Range Research Center, Starkville, MS, City of Starkville Main Street Improvements and Research Park Design Development for The Greater Starkville Development Partnership.

As principal of Phillips Design Group, Mr. Merkl's leadership has helped develop this enterprise into one of the leading design build firms in the state noting growth of greater than 30% annually over the last ten years. Phillips Design Group continues to provide unparalleled design and services to markets throughout Mississippi.

As President of Southern Landscape Management, Inc., Mr. Merkl has ushered the company into a period of unprecedented growth though the acquisition of competing business and the streamlining of production management. The Company currently serves over 200 clients in as many as 15 local markets, providing the very finest in serviced centered commercial grounds management. As a service partner with the Tennessee Valley Authority, SLM has recently entered a 10 year service agreement with the nation's largest public sector power provider.

Mr. Merkl currently resides in Starkville, MS with his wife, Lee and son, Morgan, and is a member of the First United Methodist Church.
